Eight hours a night, seven days a week- that adds up to a lot of time we spend in our bedroom sleeping. Add on a few more hours a day in there if you use your bedroom for a getaway or a study, even more, if that’s where you like to get cosy and watch TV from under the covers! So, where we are going with this? Your bedroom is actually one of the most important and well-frequented rooms in your home, people spend more time in there than any other room, even if much of it is while sleeping. So, considering the bedroom is such an important space that is so central to our daily lives, why on Earth are they usually so ugly? Bedroom decor is almost always an afterthought, if there is any in there at all. So, let’s consider some ways to remake our sad little bedrooms into happy places that will spark joy in us every time we walk through the door!
The Bed – Obviously, this is the room’s main feature, the most important thing in there and something we use every night. If your bed is a dilapidated old relic that looks like it belongs in a 19th-century hospital ward, then get rid of it and go for something new that is also bound to be more comfortable! Many people don’t realize that the average mattress is rated for just five years, and tend to push that out to twenty or more! If yours has grown too hard here, or too soft there, or has lumps in it, get with the program, Goldilocks, it’s time to get something new so you can enjoy a better sleep! Then there are the bedclothes, which may be fairly comfortable, but let’s face it, they’re ugly! An easy fix is to slip that comfy old quilt that is no longer a recognizable colour into some great new quilt cover sets that will not only add to your old quilt’s lifespan by protecting it, but will look amazing too! They come in all colours of the rainbow and an amazing variety of styles and patterns to please the eye! If you do nothing else to improve your bedroom, at least do this, it’s such an easy fix and it looks fantastic!
The Light – It may sound a bit silly to obsess with something that will be turned off for most of the time you are in your bedroom, but the light does matter. Most bedrooms come equipped with a simple overhead fixture with a single switch by the door- convenient when entering the room, but what about when it’s time to put the book down and drift off to sleep? You need to get out of bed and make a trip all the way back to the door, flip the light off, then find your way back in the dark! Very inconvenient, and we haven’t even mentioned how these fixtures look (ugly!). The solution is simple- a clip-on reading light attached to the bed frame or bed stand that you can read by in comfort. As for the overhead lamp- just leave it off!
We hope this inspires you to make your bedroom great!
